Katy Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts are active in Katy

Troop 17081 works on Silver Award Project Girl Scout Troop 17081 (Insiyah Sulemanji, Harley Maldonado, Keely Keeney, and Emily Ridgaway) made 41 fleece lap blankets as part of the requirement for their Silver Awards. The lap blankets were distributed as Christmas gifts to clients of Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston's Meals on Wheels program.

Girl Scout Troop #17443 has a lesson in business. Girl Scout Troop #17443, with owner Mr. Shawn Kashou, completed a building assessment and energy audit for their Journey! Investigation at Tutti Frutti, 19901 Kingsland Blvd. Both building and yogurt received rave reviews from the girls.

Pack 780 Cub Scouts Tour Texas Children's Hospital. The Webelos Den (10-year-olds) from Cub Scout Pack 780 recently toured the Emergency Room of the West Houston campus of Texas Children's Hospital. Dr. Todd Johnson, a physician at the hospital and a father of one of the Scouts, led the tour. While in the hospital, the boys learned about different life saving equipment and procedures and also practiced first aid techniques. Pack 780 is chartered by a congregation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from the South Katy area. All boys ages 8-10 are welcome to join. Troop 17081 conducted a take action project at the farmers market at the La Centerra on April 2 and 9 on making a difference and providing information on various different materials and ways of recycling that one normally would not know or be aware of and the how to's They also held bins to make available opportunities for people to recycle those items. Girl scout troop 17081 raise awareness about recycling at La Centerra

Girl Scout Troop #17443 collected 116 boxes of cookies for the Society of St. Stephen Home Delivered Meals in Katy as part of the national Girl Scout "Cookie Share" program. Accepting the cookies were coordinators Nevelyn Melendy and Sybil Westenhaver from Home Delivered Meals. Many thanks to all those in our community who donated boxes at cookie booths or during the door to door sales.

Start your engines!! Cub Scout Pack 1836 held their annual Pinewood Derby on March 12, 2011 at Westland Baptist Church. Scouts and their families worked for weeks on carving blocks of wood into their dream cars. The Cub Scouts had a entire afternoon of friendly competition. Along with racing and building their own display stands, the scouts’ derby cars were judged in categories such as: Most Unique, Most Animal-like, and Fastest Looking Car. Congratulations to all the scouts and their families for a job well done!

Junior Troop #17443 celebrated Girl Scout Sunday at Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Community on March 6th. To celebrate Girl Scout week, March 6 - March 12th, GSSJC Faith Base Initiatives created a program entitled Observing On My Honor! (the start of our GS promise). Troops were encouraged to do something with their church to help broaden the presence of Girl Scouts in the community. (Part of the GS promise says "to serve God".)

The weekend of February 18-20 Katy Area Girl Scouts gathered for their big Silver Spur Service Unit Camping Weekend. Once every couple of years local girls of all ages gather together for an activity packed camping weekend at beautiful Camp Agnes Arnold located close to Conroe. This year's theme was "Survivor" and over 300 local girls attended the event.

On Saturday, January 29, girls from Troop 17081 joined other scouts to honor returning veterans. Insiyah Sulemanji, Emily Ridgaway, Rebecca Martinez are pictured lining the entrance to the American Shooting Center 16500 Westheimer Parkway (George Bush Park) to salute the Veterans.

Junior Girl Scout Troop #17073 sponsored their 5th annual Mother Daughter Skating Event. This year's theme was "Party Like It's 1999" and 300 Katy Girl Scouts and their moms attended. Girl Scouts in attendance donated almost 100 yards of fleece which Troop #17073 is using to make blankets for children around the world as they work toward their Bronze Award.

Cub Scout Pack 1836, of Katy, TX, held its annual Fall Campout at Palmetto State Park in Luling, TX. Cub Scouts and their families enjoyed two action packed days of fun and learning. After a morning hike, the scouts worked on their rank advancements and played a friendly game of tug-o-war. Through other activities, the boys practiced team work, good sportsmanship and friendly competition. While enjoying their time outdoors, each scout practiced the Leave No Trace plan which teaches respect for the environment. The grand finale of the campout was when the pack built a campfire, made smores and each boy was able to tell his best joke.

CUB SCOUT PACK 780 ARROW OF LIGHT RECIPIENTS KATY Cub Scout Pack 780 recently recognized a number of Scouts for earning Cub Scouting's highest honor, the Arrow of Light. Alex Burkhart, Jason Garic and Bryce Loux received this recognition on October 5th, 2010 and Spencer Craner and Sam Jensen were recognized on December 1st, 2010. The Arrow of Light award represents each boys' personal growth in faith, citizenship, outdoorsmanship and physical fitness. In addition to receiving the Arrow of Light, Alex, Jason, Bryce and Spencer also participated in "crossing-over" ceremonies and formally joined Boy Scout Troop 780. Cub Scout Pack 780 is chartered by the Katy 3rd Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and welcomes all boys, ages 8-10 who are interested in Scouting. Recipients of Cub Scouting’s highest honor, the Arrow of Light

On December 30th, the Boy Scouts of Troop 1078 had the great experience of attending a fair for the weather merit badge. Dr. Jim Siebert was the special guest at the merit badge fair. Dr. Siebert is the chief meteorologist for Fox 26 News and helped 24 Boy Scouts earn the weather merit badge and two cub scout earn their belt loop and pin.
